In January 2013, my daughter Amy Donovan, who is currently in her 2nd  year of medicine at University, travelled to Cambodia to participate in a voluntary rural outreach medical placement. Amy was helping people in rural and remote communities who had no means of accessing basic healthcare.

While in Cambodia, her eyes were opened to the plight of many of their people, in particular a 13 year old girl named Doung Sa Ngoeum. Although 13 years old, her developmental growth and size is similar to that of a 5 year old, due to her heart condition, (see picture). Without a life saving operation, which here in Australia is done on a regular basis, it is not anticipated that she will be able to live a "full life". Her family cannot raise the funds for the operation and hence her future is not looking at all good.

We have decided to raise the necessary funds for Doung Sa Ngoeum and hope to establish a trust fund to provide future support for other Cambodian children and Australian children if needed. It is our goal to raise enough money through sponsorship to arrange for her and a parent/guardian to be taken from their village to the City Hospital, the operation to be performed and the required Post-operative care administered.

Kate and John Donovan (Amy's younger sister & dad), will run as a Duo team, hence the name "Dono Duo", in the Great Wheelbarrow Race 2013. The Great Wheelbarrow Race is a not-for-profit event, requiring competitors to run in a team for 140km spanning three days from Mareeba to Chillagoe. They will push a wheelbarrow, just as the original pioneers carried their work gear and life belongings to the Gold Fields, along the "Wheelbarrow Way". All sponsorship funds raised pre-race are donated to a charity of choice. The money we raise by participating in this event will all go towards Doung Sa Ngoeum. We will deal directly with the Medical staff and Hospital in Cambodia, so that 100% of funds are used for the purpose that was intended.

If you wish to make a direct deposit into our “Charity Account”, here are the details –
