Dear Helen and John,

This is Bianca and Jens who were your guests in Sep 2008.Now being back at home in Germany found back to daily routine and reviewing all the pictures by our own or with friends we would like to give you feedback and say thank you.

We started planning this four week trip we put emphasis on discover and explore nature and getting in touch with locals. So this trip should not be the typical pool or beach vacation you usually do when you just need a 2 week break. After all the travel we did and now looking back we can say that our entire trip met this goal.

On that 8 day round trip "Discovery drive" you both provided us outstanding accommodation and service! You are different compared to others! We appreciated your friendly, individual reception. We appreciated your upgrade on the house up on the hill. Even though we were lucky and not everyone is getting this. We appreciated the comprehensive information about the house and the surrounding nature from John. We appreciated introduction to the English couple already there for one week. Gave us opportunity for chat in the kitchen with cup of coffee or tea. We appreciated the comprehensive information about a place to go for dinner (at last we joined the club at the edge of town with the buffet , it was really good !) We appreciated your rooted to the soil personality, always offering us access to nature, people and life.

We hope that this will encourage you to give more traveller's insight to this beautiful country. Moreover We will tell our friends of you. Whenever you are around Hannover or Berlin (I remember John was here long time ago) and you need assistance do not hesitate to give us a call.

Again we have to say thanks and we appreciate to have been your guests.

Yours Sincerely

Bianca & Jens Herrnberger,

Dear John, Helen and family,

We're back home in Switzerland now and readjusting to the colder and wetter weather! We'd like to thank you again for the great hospitality you showed us, the excellent directions for our day trips around the Tablelands and of course the very enjoyable family dinner and wine on the balcony.

We wish you all the best for the future and please put us down on your list of places to visit (in Winterthur) along with Murg for Switzerland!

For the record, thanks for a wonderful stay and all the superb and extensive 'inside knowledge'. What a revelation the tablelands were! We would love to come back and do it full justice, as there was so much we missed, with us just having the few days. The platypuses (or should it be platypi?), the mugging rock wallabies and the roo ridden golf course were the highlight of our trip to Oz.
Thanks again and we hope Cyclone Larry is not to unkind.

John and Helen. First of all, we want to thank you for our enjoyable time with you at the Blue Gum. Wonderful accommodation and the friendly hospitality of you and your children made us feel right at home.   I would highly recommend your Bed and Breakfast to anyone who is travelling to the Tablelands - especially your breakfasts! The time we spent with you and your children was just as memorable as the scenic Tablelands area. Thanks for sharing your expertise on places to visit in your area. Seeing the Atherton Tablelands was one of the highlights to our visit to North Queensland.
John, after visiting the Cathedral Fig Tree, we attempted to visit the Lookout you mentioned to locate the Fairy Wrens, but only travelled about a kilometre down the road before deciding that one of the very steep descents was probably not passable in our rented vehicles. However, to top off our wonderful visit to your Atherton Tablelands, I spied a Red Backed Fairy Wren family on a fence near the road as we made our way back out. This led to about 15 minutes of an intense photography, as Irene and I gave our shutter fingers a real workout. Hopefully, we have some decent pics to show for it that we'll be able to send later.   It was fun, no matter.

Thank you Helen and John for your hospitality. We will always remember our holidays in Atherton. The tablelands are a beautiful landscape and we can only recommend this area to everyone. The waterfalls, the vulcano lakes, the rainforest and the friendly Australiens are unique.
Thanks a lot to our hosts Helen and John. With their knowledge they helped us to find beautifull spots. Without them it would have been impossible having such a beautiful holiday.
Thankyou.
We want to come back.

Hi guys. We are back in nice, wet Auckland now. Just wanted to thank you, for our enjoyable stay. We loved the area and had a great time exploring. The weather did clear after we left you, and we walked around Granite Gorge in the sun. Then the rain set back in, until we arrived back at Port Douglas a couple of days later. Our last 3 days were blue and warm, so that was nice. Anyway, thanks again. Take care.

"To John, Helen & family, Thank you for a very enjoyable stay (July 2005), in your part of Australia, we had a great time & hope to return someday. Your accommodation is very comfortable & most of all clean.   Keep up the good work! Thank you again."

"Dear John & Helen, We really enjoyed our brief stay with you in March 2005, and wish we could have spent a few more nights with you to explore the Tablelands more fully.  Many thanks again for your hospitality and for all your helpful advice about getting to see the local area."

"Our stay at Blue Gum, in March 2005, was very relaxing - homely comfortable accommodation, and wonderfully welcoming hosts with a wealth of information about things to do and see. Each day started with a fabulous breakfast on the deck, complete with a panoramic view and close-up encounters with native birds. We could not have been more comfortable, and in a location central to all the many attractions we wanted to visit. Thanks for your warm hospitality and easy manner, it really added a lot to our holiday."

"Dear Helen, John and the little "Von Donovan's".
What a way to culminate our recent visit to Far North Qld! We are only sorry it was our last night on our very busy schedule and flew out the next day from Cairns - Joan and Claude (USA) to Adelaide and me back home to Brisbane. While the weather was beyond your control, all other facets of our stay in the Atherton area were very pleasant, due mainly to your attention to our specific requirements. Helen, keep up your welcoming cuppa and info session! The filling breakfast overlooking the nearby valley and mountain ranges from your front deck, your tips on what to see locally on a wet day and that brilliant recitation by your beautiful children really captured the hearts of my overseas guests, and mine too, of course! Thank you for showing my overseas friends what real Australian families are made of! And what a great and safe country this is to travel in. Keep up your good work in the tourism industry. Establishments like yours make it easy for people like me to recommend the value-for-money B&B circuit. It was such a shame that we had so short a time with you. I hope to make it longer next time.
Kind regards Norm Boniface."

Norm Boniface, Brisbane, Australia.

Dear John and Helen,
Many thanks indeed for looking after us so well when we were in Atherton. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We are beginning to get over the long flight back to UK. Also, my thanks for giving us all the local info for our day trips out in the area. We both feel that the Atherton Tablelands is well worth a visit - and not just as a day trip out from Cairns, (and they only go out to Kuranda for the Railway and Skyrail....!). When we stayed in the Blue Mountains they had the same problem with day visits from Sydney, with the area not being advertised enough in its own right.

Hello to John and Helen and the gang. Thank you so much for all your kindness, hospitality, and genuinely wonderful company. Even in such a short time, we trully felt like part of the family. The tours were exceptional and we really appreciate all the long hours that you spent with us -- definitely a unique experience and we're proud to say that we've 'gone bush' :) Thank you again! Lots of love to all the little ones!

G'day, Helen and John! We're home and back to work in New Jersey, USA after a wonderful vacation in Australia and New Zealand. Ann, John and I (Gregg) want to thank you from the bottoms of our heart for the fantastic full day tour of the Outback. We had the most exciting time on our 1 month Holiday as Australians put it :)The scenery was beautiful and the lunch we had by the billabong which Helen prepared was delicious. Ann loved your home grown Mango and we have never seen one so large! The whole day was packed with scenery from Mount Mulligan, watching kangaroos, winery to hand feeding the Wallabies. Memories we will absolutely never forget. We have film we are getting developed so we can send you pics once they are done. We hope to return to the Land Down Under one day soon and when we do we will be contacting you again as we would like to stay at your Bed and Breakfast and go on further tours as well deeper into the Outback. I will definately recommend your services to anyone I know who may be going to Australia. Once again, Thank you very much for all your kindness and knowledge as you made our day more special then it could ever be! Thank you very much, Gregg, Ann and John.

A wonderful place to stay with hosts John and Helen going out of their way to make us feel welcome. The area is stunning and with Johns help we explored the tablelands and had the best time. The homebrew was an enjoyable end to our days. We came as guests and left as friends, and have told everyone we know, to stay at Blue Gum! We will be back!!

Our stay on B&B Blue Gum was incridile, thanks to the hosts, Helen and John. They have some lovely rooms and were very kind to tell us about the meny offers Atheton Tableland holds. Unfortunately all of our sleep-overs in Australia was planned, otherwise we would have loved to stay there a couple of days more. We very much hope for a chance to come back some other time.

It was late and dark, we were tired and a little anxious as to where we would rest our weary heads that night, but when we finally found Blue Gum, John immediately made us feel so welcome. Staying the night, was one of the highlights of our stay in Queensland. Great hospitality and local tips. Thanks guys.

Can I firstly say your B&B in Atherton was one of the very best places we stayed in on our tour of Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. Secondly, the meal we had in Yungaburra (BYO Restaurant - the "Burra Inn") was without doubt the best meal we had on our entire trip. I agree entirely with you that the tropical tablelands are not only one of Australia's best kept secrets but one of the world's. It should be an essential part of every visitor's tour of the Northern Eastern part of Australia. Given my background as a Professor of Tourism in Scotland and an ex CEO of the Scottish Tourist Board please feel free to use this feedback. Best wishes.

Our three night stay with you was a memorable part of our six week holiday in the eastern states. North Queensland is a wonderful place with so much to see and do. We enjoyed watching the platypus at your special viewing spot. One little fellow got within about three metres of me as I sat and waited patiently at the waters edge. If you ever make it to Perth in Western Australia please come and stay at our B&B Possum Creek Lodge in the Perth Hills.

We booked Blue Gum B@B through the internet, and though the web site was very informative, we knew little about the place. Now we can say that the few days we spent with John, Helen and their wonderful children were the best days for us in Australia. We would never have been able to see so much of Australia without John's tours. John showed us the most beautiful, untouched places, which we would certainly miss going with commercial tours. John's extensive knowledge of the area, his willingness to share this knowledge, his openness to the world, and his intelligence made these tours the most interesting part of our trip. We enjoyed the vacation much more not only because John shared such remote places in Australia with us, but also because we were in the company of kind, good-hearted people. Thank you John and Helen.

G'day, Helen and John! We're at home and back to work after a wonderful stay in Sydney. Taronga Zoo is splendid and the Botanical Gardens were beautiful even in Winter. The performance at the Opera House was really world-class and fitting for such a remarkable structure. And, yes, we even got to see the whales in the Harbor! However nice the attractions of Sydney, we quickly missed the quiet, uncrowded Tablelands. What a beautiful place! And surrounded by so many, varied beautiful places -- Lake Barrine, the Curtain and Cathedral Figs and the Waterfall Tour out of Milaa-Milaa. Of course, for me as the birdwatcher, Hastie's Swamp and the Mareeba Wetlands stand out. Mustn't forget your Platypus Hole: Not only the Platys but a Sea Eagle, to boot! With so many interesting, exciting and beautiful places within easy reach of the Blue Gum Bed and Breakfast, we really regretted having to leave so soon. And it's true that the warmth of our host and hostess and the children topped it all off wonderfully. Say, you didn't mention Faulty Towers! Probably just as well: Sally has memorized most of the scripts and had we started, the nice German couple would have been really confused. But we are forewarned now, Basil! Next time. Bob and Sally

We selected Blue Gum off the internet and were not quite sure what to expect. However the warm and helpful greeting by Helen soon put us at rest as we settled in to our comfortable bedroom/lounge. John came down later to brief us on what to see/do/eat etc. then suggested a couple of things to do before nightfall. The excellent breakfasts were served in a pleasant family environment, with the beautiful children at a respectful distance! Our hosts were very helpful in making bookings to nearby restaurants, which seemed to be very well patronised. We valued the opportunity - at John's direction -in seeing platypus in the wild. It was worth while getting up early. Thanks again, John and Helen, in making our stay such a memorable one.

My favorite part of the two week vacation I spent in Oz was the three days we spent at John and Helen's. The Blue Gum is absolutely charming, as well as being peaceful and relaxing. Helen is a wonderful cook, and John was hilarious in addition to being a great tour guide. Who knew we could have Faulty Towers scenes enacted over homebrew? High standards for a B&B, way beyond our expectations. I have already started recommending their place to my Aussie and US friends, and hope to visit them again the next time I can get to Queensland.

It was wonderful staying in Blue Gum, the room is nice and clean. The most important thing was I had a very good time with the kids: Amy, Meg, Kate, Jack, Tom. Helen cooks so well and John is a very good guide in explaining everything. In my opinions, staying in Blue Gum is much much nicer than staying in a big hotel.

John & Helen - thanks very much for your warm and friendly hospitality. We enjoyed our stay very much. It was nice to arrive to a very clean and comfy place after just driven 7hrs from Karumba on the Gulf of Carpentaria. The views from the verandah were spectacular. If we had longer we would have extended our stay but time was tight. We shall be sure to return to your lovely pole home one day and we will definitely recommend to our friends who visit The Tablelands to stop in at Blue Gum B&B. Although we live only one hour away in Cairns, we decided to escape the heat and humidity and relax on the cool Atherton Tablelands for a weekend. Blue Gum was recommended to us by Queensland Rail, and I have to say that it was the best advice we have received for a long time. We found the rooms spacious, clean and homely, with an adjoining common room for next time we bring more friends! We know the area quite well, being 'locals' but the most important advice I would offer to anyone reading this site with a view to staying at Blue Gum would be "Relax with John and Helen, and let them share their extensive local knowledge, excellent breakfasts, splendid views, ornithology in the garden, and the best room rates for miles" We were amazed at how little we knew of the area, and the boundless opportunities John and Helen can offer. As locals, we are proud to know that tourism in the area has an honest, friendly and welcome face at Blue Gum. We'll be back!

To Helen, John and kids, We arrived here Sunday afternoon after being at Undara - and Nina was having a tooth-ache - and not very happy! But fortunately Helen has some pain-killer and even a dentist-appointment Monday, which Nina could take over - so everything turned out great. First our intention was to stay only for 1 night. After a warming welcome from Helen and recommendations to see the local Christmas carols by some of Atherton’s pre-schools kids, where also Meg and Kate Donovan performed. After a good nights sleep we decided to stay one more night. Under the lovely breakfast John told us what we could do during the day. At the same evening after a wonderful day we decided to stay two more nights. And guess what… After the two nights we decided to stay even one more night. The only reason that we couldn’t stay any longer was that we had a flight from Cairns airport the next morning. Vir Super Hostem, is Latin and it means something like: A man who is proprietor for the guests. This is also John’s old family European heraldry shield since long time ago, but even in our age it’s still so perfect for Donovan. It’s hard to find any better place in Queensland than together with John and Helen and all the lovely kids. We miss you all! Our kids is asking us almost every day how much more money we need to save before we can go back “Down Under”. Love from Mats, Marina, Mathias, Marcus and Madeleine from Göteborg, Sweden.

The Blue Gum was our first stop in Australia and a very good experience. Lovely, helpful people living in a wonderful area. We enjoyed very much our stay in the Blue Gum place. We took a nice and cool rest , compared to the sea shore. We found plenty of nice places in the Atherton tablelands where to have nice walks in the forest , where you can swim close to the numerous waterfalls ( our preferred were the Emerald creek ones). We enjoyed very much the hospitality of John and Helen whose advices where always good to follow ( listen to them for the restaurants advices!). And also their nice children.

We enjoyed our stay at Atherton Blue Gum very much. Especially, wonderful views from verandah, very reasonable price with John & Helen's warm-hearted welcome, excellent breakfast, even when we order fruit as additional, the price is still cheap. Clean room and Fresh air. Hope we can visit again.

Thanks for the most enjoyable stay in your lovely and well kept Guest House. The most memorable: Awakening to the soft light over the rolling hills of the Table Lands - enjoying breakfast on the high veranda.

Congratulations John and Helen on your first class B&B. The 2 nights that we shared your home was lovely, the customer service that you offered exceeded our expectations. Your home was just perfect for the 2 nights of our honeymoon, not to mention the balcony breakfasts. You have got it right.  THANK YOU ,WELL DONE

This was our very first stay at a Bed and Breakfast and what an introduction. Our only regret is that we did not stay at Blue Gum B&B when we first arrived on the Tablelands. John knows all the sights to see in the area and gave us so much information on things to do and see that we would have missed if we had not stayed with them. As well as being central to all the attractions the Tablelands has to offer Blue Gum felt like a home away from home, very clean and comfortable. Our children were made to feel very welcome. John, Helen and family, Thank you, we will be back.

We enjoyed our stay at the Atherton Blue Gum B&B very much. The hospitality we received was of the highest degree, and unmistakably the best. John and Helen made every effort to make us feel welcome, and part of their family. All the best.

We stayed two weeks at Blue Gum. Helen and John you have the homely touch, without being intrusive. The views and the rooms are fantastic, its luxury to have breakfast served on the veranda. We had a very enjoyable time.

Our stay was terrific and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would certainly recommend it. Everyone was so very friendly and your certainly will not get a better breakfast anywhere. We can certainly recommend the International Club near by for a great evening out!

Great location, great lodgings, great people, great food and outstanding home brew are but a few of the reasons to visit the Donovan's in this idylic setting. We always feel like we are home when we stay at the Atherton B&B. Don't deny yourself the opportunity to relax with the hosts who really do have the most.

Breakfast on Blue Gum's verandah, with such a breathtaking view and the pleasure of White-cheeked Honeyeaters feeding on flowers just feet away, is such a joy you want it to last all day.
